People Helping People is a list of charitable causes in our area that need donations or volunteers. The Beacon Journal has not investigated these causes, so donors should verify their worthiness and the tax-deductibility of contributions. Call Mary Beth Breckenridge, 330-996-3756.Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities is collecting canned goods and other nonperishable items through Friday for its Starving for Donations food drive to support local food pantries. Donations are being accepted at the Medina County Achievement Center, 4691 Windfall Road, Medina. Information is at www.mcbdd.org.Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve, 889 Jonathan Ave., Akron, OH 44306, is a youth development organization that provides after-school and school-break programming to school-age, primarily at-risk youth. The clubs need the following:• Businesses, families or individuals to donate gifts for club members through the Giving Tree program. Donors receive tags containing Christmas gift wishes and buy gifts for the children. Deadline is Dec. 19.• Organizations or people to “adopt” families for the holidays.• Volunteers to help at the Annual Art Exhibit from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 14, or to cut mats that will be used in the exhibit. Mat cutters start in late November and are asked to give a couple of hours a week for about three weeks, until the mats are finished.• Volunteers to serve as basketball coaches for the 2012 season, from January to March. The time commitment is approximately 15 hours a week for games and practices. Players range from 6 to 16 years old.• Donations of new or gently worn children’s winter coats, hats, gloves, shoes and winter boots for ages 6 to 18.• Volunteers to help in the art room at the Arlington Clubhouse, working with children ages 5 to 10.• Volunteers to help children ages 5 to 10 with homework during Power Hour at the Arlington Clubhouse.For information on any of the opportunities, contact Melody Laster at 330-773-3375 or Melody@wrkids.org.
